about

Songs written by members of the Hope College Worship Team for our Fall 2015 series through the Beatitudes (Matthew 5).

It is surprisingly difficult to find musical adaptations of the Beatitudes - even though we often imagined this thick description of the Kingdom of God being chanted off of the lips of Jesus. Scholars tell us that the beatitudes are likely built from the prayerbook of the bible itself - so we knew we needed to sing them as we studied and prayed them.

As we've moved through the news-cycle of this Fall we've often returned to the Beatitudes for that daily gospel reorientation - that rejoicing comes not from a life easily experienced but a life that pursues peace, piercing right and inevitable suffering and injustice...but still we rejoice and are blessed.

My deepest gratitude to these students for pouring themselves into this project alongside all of the other busyness in their lives. It was a delight to see them surprised by what they wrote and how God blessed them through the process.

The Beatitudes are an iconic and centering reminder of true life in God's kingdom. May these songs encourage you as we worship through this Advent season 2015.

Grace and Peace,
Bruce Benedict
